If you're preparing for your own graduation photo session, here are a few tried-and-true tips to help you feel confident, prepared, and fully celebrated. These simple touches can make a beautiful difference, not only in how your college graduation photos come together, but in how meaningful and joyful the experience feels along the way.
This guide has all the "must know" details before your college graduation photos; what to wear, what to bring, and why taking grad photos is totally worth it. So grab your cap and gown… it’s time to celebrate!
When should you take your college graduation photos?
Springtime is my favorite for College graduation photos! From March all the way through June with each month bringing its own weather perks.
- March often delivers cooler temperatures and soft, flattering light, perfect for comfortable sessions and layered outfits.
- April brings blooming flowers and fresh greenery, adding a beautiful pop of color and a true springtime feel to your images.
- May offers warmer days and longer evenings, making it great for golden-hour photos and relaxed, joyful sessions.
- June is bright and vibrant, with lush landscapes and a celebratory summer energy that pairs perfectly with graduation season.
That said, it’s important not to wait until the last minute to schedule your graduation photos. Many photographers are fully booked by March or April, so reaching out early is essential. I recommend contacting your photographer during the first or second month of your final semester to secure your session. Planning ahead allows you to reserve a spot with your preferred photographer, mark the date on your calendar before the season becomes hectic, and enjoy a smoother, more relaxed experience as graduation approaches.
What should you wear to your college graduation photos?
When it comes to graduation outfits, most girls lean toward a white dress under their cap and gown and honestly, it’s a classic for a reason. It’s clean, timeless, and photographs beautifully. Plus, there are so many different styles of white dresses out there, so you can keep the traditional look while still showing off your personality. A few favorite shops from past clients include Princess Polly, LULUS, and Altar'd State. Of course, Amazon has incredible finds!
Not a white-dress person? No problem at all. Soft, light colors like pastel pink, baby blue, or other airy tones look amazing in photos and are a fun way to stand out while still keeping things graduation appropriate.
One quick tip: try to avoid super bright colors, bold patterns, or outfits with words on them.
For guys, you really can’t go wrong with a button down and dress pants. Add a tie if you want to keep things polished, or skip it and swap in jeans for a more relaxed feel. Want to rock a full suit...Do it! Want something more laid-back and personal...That works too.
At the end of the day, there are no hard rules here. The best outfit is the one that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and like yourself. When you feel good, it shows and that’s what makes your graduation photos truly shine.
*COMFY SHOES ARE A MUST!
You might be dreaming of wearing those cute heels or dress shoes, but believe me: walking across campus and around town in them will get old and get old fast. Definitely bring your stylish shoes for the actual photos, but plan to wear sneakers or slides between locations.
What Should You Bring to Your
College Graduation Photos?
Think of this as your grad photo packing list...fun, easy, and all about celebrating you!
- Your Cap & Gown
This one’s a must! Your cap and gown are the heart of your graduation photos, and we’ll use them in lots of ways like wearing them, holding them, tossing the cap, and showing off your school colors.
*DON'T FORGET TO STEAM THAT GOWN! Your Graduation gown will most likely come folded up in a plastic bag and WRINKLED! At the very least, hang yours up a few days ahead of time. Even better? Give it a good steam (or a gentle inside-out iron) the night before your shoot.
No steamer? No problem. Hang it in the bathroom while you take a hot shower and let the steam work its magic. A fresh, crisp gown makes a huge difference in photos and instantly elevates the whole look. Future you will be so glad you took this step.
- Cords, Stoles, or Medals
Bring anything special you’ve earned along the way! Cords, stoles, and medals add meaning to your photos and are such a great way to highlight the accomplishments you worked so hard for. Plus, they’re easy to weave into different poses and moments.
- Props
Props are where things get really fun. Champagne bottles, confetti poppers (bio-degradable only) balloons—yes please. They add movement, energy, and a little celebration flair to your photos.
I also love when grads bring something personal from their college journey. Played a sport? Bring your basketball, lacrosse stick, or jersey. Part of a club or organization? Bring something that represents it. English major? A few favorite books are perfect. Nursing degree? Bring your stethoscope. These small details make your session feel uniquely yours.
- A Friend, Partner, or Hype Person
Totally optional but highly encouraged if it helps you feel more relaxed and excited. Bringing a best friend, partner, or favorite cheerleader can add extra laughs and energy. They can also jump in for a few photos with you, which is such a sweet way to remember the people who supported you along the way. No worries if you come solo, you’ll have me as your built-in hype girl either way.
At the end of the day, bring what makes you feel comfortable, confident, and celebrated. This is your moment so let’s make it fun and unforgettable!
Location! Location! Location!
The most popular choice for College grad sessions is usually on campus but if you're an online student or don't feel particularly connected to your campus, don't let this limit your session options. Downtown, the beach, in your favorite coffee shop...don't be afraid to think outside of the box.
Campus Locations
- Iconic Landmarks & Signage
University gates, library entrances, statues, pillars, these are the classic “yep, I went here” shots that instantly tell your college story.
- The Quad or Main Campus Green
Big open spaces, historic trees, and beautiful architecture? Yes please. These spots are timeless and give your photos that effortlessly classic campus feel.
- Your Department or Major Building
The place where you spent most of your time (and probably survived a few long nights). Shooting here adds a personal, full-circle moment to your session.
- Stadiums or Athletic Fields
Perfect for showing off school spirit, especially if sports were a big part of your college experience.
- Alumni Gardens or Campus Parks
These areas are often peaceful, lush, and stunning, making them a go-to for soft, beautiful backdrops that photograph like a dream.
Graduation is a once-in-a-lifetime milestone, and your photos should absolutely reflect the pride, joy, and personality that got you to this point. If you’re ready to celebrate this incredible season with a college grad photos session that feels true to you, I’d love to chat.
